Book Van Hits the Streets

Because transportation can be difficult in Richmond, it has always been important to bring the library to the community. And despite the Library’s full-size bookmobile, residents’ need for mobile library services were not being met. Thousands of school children, seniors, and special-needs adults were filling an ever-growing waiting list.

Library staff told the RPLF that a smaller, more agile book van was the answer. The van would essentially double the number of visits the Library could make each week. That would make significant positive impact on residents’ lives.

Thanks to the generosity of dozens of private donors, businesses and civic groups, in 2018 the RPLF was able to purchase the vehicle. The book van has been visiting schools and community centers throughout our city.  The “WOW” van has enhanced the lives of tens of thousands of people across our city.
